[UPDATED] Narain bags second test driver role for Williams

UPDATE
Williams confirms Narain Karthikeyan as their second test driver.

Sir Frank Williams had a few good words about Narain

Narain’s brief period in the car in December, during which he provided valuable feedback, made a very distinct impression on our engineers. Having a year’s GP racing and testing to his credit is also advantageous for us so I am pleased we can now formally confirm his appointment to the team.”

Words like those from Sir Frank Williams mean a lot. The man has been around for a long time and knows what he is talking about.

For me the other cool part of the whole deal was the TATA logo on the nose of the new Williams FW28.

Business Standard reports that Narain has bagged the second test driver position for Williams.

The 28-year old Chennai ace has bagged a test driver deal for Williams. Narain’s involvement with the team will include sharing testing responsibilities on Fridays prior to the race weekends.

An announcement to this effect is expected soon. Narain had earlier tested for Williams at Jerez, Spain, over a three-day period. He drove the V-8 powered Williams F1 car quicker than the top two drivers of the team.

Alex Wurz is officially the senior test driver and he will be performing the friday driver role and shaking down the car before the race. Previous media reports suggested that Narain will take over the job in the Asian leg of the championship, this way, there could be a lot of media events scheduled for both test drivers.

Media reports have suggested that Wurz’s contract has a drive for him in 2007. I am not sure if Narain’s contract is anything similar, but its nice to see that he has managed to keep himself in some capacity.
