“What drives an individual to think of collecting money ?”

distress This is a very touchy subject and I got flamed (email fights in layman terms) by many of my buddies coz they did not understand my point. I was not trying to say that they were cheaters, I just wanted to logically think.

After a big disaster like the Tsunami, there were loads of people who wanted to help. I did my part, went to a dinner organized by the Indian Student Association, spent a day working with the Sri Lankan Association in town and things like that.

But there were buddies of mine, who decided that they wanted to collect money from others and do the work themselves.

What struck me was the question “How does one think of collecting money ?” There are a million organizations the world, right from the Prime Ministers office in the affected countries right down to local organizations who already collect the money. Given that a percentage of this money is wasted or stolen, I still decide to contribute to these organizations.

But how one earth would an individual collect the money, even if he did, how does he know that the money is spent or given to the individuals who are acctually affected and not the by standers who are there just to loot people. Government organizations have a lot of red tape and yes it does take a while for the money to be distributed, but we can be assured that a huge percentage of the money will go to the needy.

In contrast, one of my uncles decided that he wanted to goto a resturant, buy food in packets and distribute it near the beach. In the end he was disgusted, because there were fights and he came to the conclusion that he spent more money on looters and opportunitists than on people who acctually deserved it. The problem was as an individual he had no way of identifying who was affected and who was not.

The second point is that it takes a lot of leg work to acctually distribute the money that one personally collects. Its a lot of responsibility, given that the money was given for the specific purpose of helping the affected, not just for the homeless or the needy. It takes a huge organization like the PMO (Prime Ministers Office) to acctually identify the affected and as an individual this is a daunting task.

So here goes my question again “What drives an individual to think of collecting money ?”

Google on South India – Tamil actually

Google Current is a brief, once every half hour, television program on the station Current TV. The series is hosted by Conor Knighton and Kinga Philipps. The series tracks not necessarily what the news is, but what people are searching for on Google.

Each episode has a one or two word title, based on one of the websites or search terms highlighted. Only the top-of-the-hour segments use live hosts. The middle-of-the-hour segments are presented with text, graphics and music.

And this particular show talks about Tamilnadu. It’s pretty cool, go take a look.

Malgudi Days on DVD now at Amazon.com

[UPDATE] I have ordered the DVD from Amazon and expect a review of the DVD in a few days.

The DVD for the first 13 episodes can be got from amazon. Just search for Malgudi Days DVD.

I also stumbled upon MalgudiDays.com. For those who do not remember the awesome series here is the intro from the site.

Malgudi exists only in the mind of the author. It is typical of any small town or village. Habited by
timeless characters who could be living anywhere in the world. They are simple folk dealing with their lives in an uniquely engaging, humorous and completely human and humane manner.

Malgudi a well known town has become the University of California that actually shows it as a small town in their map of India.

‘Malgudi’ is described as a small town in South India and yet it could be any town, anywhere, for its truths are universal. Look in to the small streets and you will see interesting characters like beggars, servants, masters and their world. There are personalities at special moment in their lives or at the time of the crisis of spirit. Rich and the poor, they too love Malgudi and worship and believe with hope and dream and so it reflects all human nature that is bestowed on them.

Now only if amazon could fix their glitch, I would be watching the DVD in the next couple of days.

A Suggestion

Politics has never been a favorite topic of mine, but recent events have made me take a stab at them

India is at a crucial point in history. Climbing the ladder to become a world leader has its own pitfalls.

Ever since India got its independence, we have managed to not align ourselves with any country, at least not militarily. Although from the You are with us or against us stand point of the United States, it looks like India was never on their side, we just plain preferred to sit out some important events as declared by the historians and in case you have not noticed, we never took sides. The only place you will find the Indian army is as a part of the UN’s peacekeeping force, and rightly so.

The honeymoon had to end sometime and it looks like now is the time.

India has/had two deals in its hand, an oil pipeline from Iran and the access to civilian nuclear technology from the USA. A few months ago when India voted against Iran, everyone thought that the pipeline deal would be off. But after a little reluctance Iran said they would analyze the situation based on its own merits.

If things work, India will be the first country in the world that has not signed the non-proliferation treaty that will get its hands on civilian nuclear technology. And about the non-proliferation treaty, if you thought about it well enough, there are not many countries that India would like to deal with (besides rouge nations). Given that we have a head on our shoulders and enough money for the near future, I do not see the slimmest chance of that happening.

Mr. Mulford stated the obvious, but got into trouble for that. Practically analyzing the situation would tell you that if India does not support the US, the US would not find it appropriate to support India. So, we cannot have the cake and eat it.

Historically India and the USA have never been allies. They have always had a neutral relationship, acknowledging that the other existed and living life their own way. Given that China has started to become a major power in the world, analysts feel that The White House has decided to change its attitude towards India to counter balance things in Asia. Over the past couple of years, there have been joint Air Force and Naval Missions between both countries. There has been an increased cooperation and sharing of sensitive intelligence information and of course Americans have stated investing in India, instead of just using it as their back office: Things that cannot be attributed simply to India’s economic boom.

Given the fact that this relationship is going to last for a long time, I suggest that India take the upper hand. India never has been seen as the mouthpiece of any country and we do not want start doing it now. So I think India should push its own agenda and attach a few strings. I mean, if you are going to eat the cake, might as well make a party out of it.

Yes it’s the same analogy. If you are in the company of a good-looking girl, you have already entered the Forbidden City. When seen with a country like the USA, India has a newfound glamour and attraction, like the kid on the block with a new bike. We absolutely have to make good use of this and make good use of it when the time is right. Look at what happened to France, most fast food joints now serve freedom fries.

There are things that immediately strike me as important, as far as the Indian agenda goes

a) The Security Council seat.

For a long time now, India has been trying to get into the Security Council. As one of the strongest developing countries, I think India should on its own merit get in. But that has not seemed to materialize. So lets lay that down on the table. We already have Russia in there that will support us, besides China is in there, so why can’t we ?

b) How about them patents.

Although this does look important, in a few years the Indian markets will open up to the world. It will not be funny when we decide to go to those yoga classes and the instructors have to pay a royalty to some guy in California who decided to patent different positions that technically belongs to Indians. And think lets not get started on Basmati rice.

c) Please do not tell us what to do (atleast not in public)

Indians are smart. Honestly, if you do not trust me, take a walk to the nearest NASA facility or for that matter any place that has anything to do with technology or medicine. You will find many brown brothers and sisters. We like any self-respecting country do not like to be told what to do. We understand complications, politics and policies. We hate being looked at as the Asian office of the White House Press Secretary . So if there is something that we should know, that you think we might have overlooked (slim chance), let us know through the diplomatic channels. I mean, isn’t that why you have an Ambassador sitting in our capital. Make use of the man, please.

There could be more things that India could attach as strings and I will keep you updated as and when I can think of more. If you feel I missed something, please feel free to comment on it.

Summoned isn’t that too old world

In case you missed it this is what happened.

US Ambassador David Mulford in an interview to the PTI said

if New Delhi did not vote against Tehran’s nuclear programme at the February 2 IAEA meeting, the fallout on the Indo-US nuclear deal in the US Congress would be “devastating” and the Indo-US nuclear initiative will “die” in the House.

The statement was later clarified to be a personal one by Mr. Mulford.

What amused me was the use of the word summoned.

Sharply reacting to US Ambassador David C Mulford’s remarks on the future of Indo-US nuclear deal, Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran summoned him and bluntly stated that his comments were “inappropriate” and “not conducive to building a strong partnership” between the two countries.

Although it makes perfect sense, the word summoned seems to be a little old world.

‘Inventor of the Year’ is an Indian American

Indian Americans have always been known as great doctors or amazing geeks. But R Bharath Rao, one of the senior directors of a division of Siemens Medical Solutions took the status to a whole new level by combiniing Patient Information with technology.

An Indian-American scientist has been named ‘Inventor of the Year’ for his pioneering work in developing a new system, which utilises data to improve patient care and clinical decisions.

R Bharat Rao, senior director of Engineering Research Development, Computer-Aided Diagnosis and Therapy Group at Siemens Medical Solutions, is one of 12 Siemens inventors to receive the award.

As much as I would like to congratulate Mr. Rao, I have and always will be worried that computers can never replace the human train of thought. Algorithms always have a chance of missing some information, I am sure that they tested this product very well, but I hope they use this as a backup to the doctors analogy.

Kaun Banega Ramayan Expert?

The Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh is launching a contest for Kids. The prize money is an amazing $10,000.

Indian-origin children are all set to ride the ‘hot seat’ as a new contest Kaun Banega Ramayan Expert opens in the United States, aimed at instilling moral values and a sense of Indian heritage among youngsters.

The quiz, launched by the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh in the US, is an effort to increase awareness about the great epic among Indian-American children and will carry a prize of $10,000, the HSS said.

As children prepare for the quiz, it would help them inculcate moral values portrayed in the Ramayana such as brotherly love, devotion, sacrifice, valour and personal integrity which are very relevant to modern times, it added.

Only if I had watched Ramayana on TV when I was a kid. The only thing I can remember is the funky special effects.

The HSS website is here and the Contest website is here.

The movie finally ended at we started walking out when a kid approached us. He was one of those kids who carried a “I lost my speech” certificates.

Just like in Seinfeld, I wonder where they get those things made, but that is another post.
